    In 1974, Japan achieved the largest production of 14.3 million tons of brown rice and ever since then, it has been steadily reducing rice production every year. In 2019, the production volume of brown rice was approximately 7.2 million tons, which was almost equal to that of 1907.

    When Japan suffered from food shortages after World War II, increasing food production was a national goal, so as not to let the nation starve.
