    The preface to the first edition indicates that the original book was an abridged form of a paper read before the Keswick, Literary and Scientific Society on 19th January 1874. First published in 1877, a second enlarged edition published in 1889.

    • Notes: Includes notes from the bookseller. Signature on inside front cover indicating that this was the personal copy of Horace Bolingbroke Woodward. He was born in 1848, worked for the Geological Survey, was awarded the Murchison and Wollaston medals and was a Fellow of the Royal Society.
