| Scope & content | Summary Translation A self-published account of the mills on three tributaries of the Mosel – the Dunnbach, Grossbach and Flaumbach. These were mainly cereal mills, but others were used for oil, tanning, bones and trass used in the making of cement. The text describes the laws governing mills, the techniques, and the decline of milling. It goes on to look at the topography of the three rivers, and other sights found along them. The greater part of the book describes the individual mills in each valley, with information about their history, much of it based on interviews with the millers themselves. It ends with a couple of poems about millers, one of them in local dialect. The book contains reproductions of a number of historical documents and newspapers, diagrams, a sketch map, and black-and-white photos. |
