Scope & contentSummary Translation: A general cultural history of mills from antiquity onwards.

The first part covers the evolution of grinding technology. The second part considers the motive forces and types of mill, from human and animal powered ones, via the evolution of water mills to the development of windmills from early horizontal ones to the breakthrough of the vertical windmill and its refinements.

The third part covers the work of millers, from slaves in antiquity, to millers’ rights and duties under feudalism, and the way their lives changed subsequently.

The fourth part looks at mills and millers in folklore, poetry and music, in Germany and other countries, followed by a final part on mills in pictorial art. The book is richly illustrated with reproductions of historical pictures and documents, diagrams, photos of mills and many of the works of art mentioned in the final part.
