| Scope & content | This book traces the geological history, natural history and the industrial history of the watermills on the By Brook, a tributary of the Bristol Avon River in Wiltshire. The course of the brook begins at Castle Hill, above Castle Combe and ends when it joins the River Avon at Bathford. Includes section on watermills along the Avon. The main part of the book is a gazetteer of the 22 watermills on the By Brook and the Broadmead Brook that have utilised the steep drop of 200m in 25km and water power since Roman times for corn milling, fulling mills and paper mills. A walking route of 6km from Ford to Long Slaughterford includes many historic mill sites. |
