Scope & contentThis book describes the restoration of three historic buildings: a windmill; a toll-house; and a railway level-crossing house. Section one describes the author's purchase and restoration, into a home, of the derelict Old Windmill at Edgehead near Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland. Formerly Chesterhill windmill built between 1775 and 1780 by the Earl of Stair, this book tells the story of the mill that operated as a 'whinmill' (or provender mill) used for grinding gorse (whins) to make donkey or cattle feed.

In 1993, the mill, by then derelict, was purchased by Kenneth and Arlene Hutchison. They began restoring the Old Windmill again as described in the book "One cap over the windmill".
