    Scope & contentThis history of the mill, and other information contained in this booklet, is presented in order to enhance interest in, and understanding of, the windmill at Water Mill;
    it is also presented in appreciation of the men, women and children who, through the years have been the thoughtful stewards of the mill, preserving it for us all to enjoy.
    The windmill on the commons at Water Mill is one of Long Island's oldest and most visible historic landmarks. A unique example of the utilitarian wood age architecture, it is also a lasting symbol of community history and pride. The grace of the windmill's extended sails and the taut strength of its tower symbolize the rich history and physical beauty that have made Long Island's East End world renowned.
    The mill, restored by the community in 1987, approaches its third century with year a new role- that of cultural resource for children and adults as they seek to understand the traditions, lifestyles and values that shaped this region.
