The decline in the number of water-mills is attributed to climate, war, and floods.A chapter on ‘Mill rights’ describes the gradual legal regulation of mill ownership in the Netherlands. A chapter on ‘Building of mills’ describes the differences between undershot and overshot construction, in particular as they relate to the region covered here. Historical records enable the construction of many mills to be traced.
