Scope & content | Das Hausbuch der Mendelschen Zwölfbrüderstiftung zu Nürnberg – The house-book of the Mendel Twelve Brothers Foundation in Nuremburg This is a two-volume work published in 1965 by Bruckmann München, containing reproductions (some in colour and some black and white) of 15th and 16th century watercolours depicting craftsman at work, with an accompanying volume of historical essays. The Mendelsche Zwölfbrüderstiftung was established in Nuremburg in 1388 by Konrad Mendel. It was an alms-house intended to support twelve elderly poor citizens of good repute. The ‘brothers’ followed a rule similar to that of a monastery and were expected to spent a significant amount of time in church and at prayer. Portraits of the brothers were compiled in three ‘house books’ (Hausbücher) now held by Nuremburg city library, They were shown carrying out the trade by means of which they had made their living prior to their admittance to the alms-house. These illustrations are a unique and valuable historical record of the crafts and technologies of the time. This publication is a reproduction of the first of the three volumes. Reproductions of all of the ‘house books’ are available online: https://www.nuernberger-hausbuecher.de/ See also https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrnberger_Hausb%C3%BCcher |
