| Scope & content | Contains an inscription on the front cover page and a list of about 400 maps and plans described in the book that trace the documented evolution of Hull over 800 years from VI century to 1910, although evidence of Bronze Age settlement exists. The author was given access to examine maps and plans in the British Museum and numerous public and private collections, including his own private collection. Sheppard obtained copies of the maps and plans that were deposited in the Wilberforce Museum or the Town Hall Record Room [research would be needed to ascertain the current repositories of these maps]. The earliest map from the VIth century shows the roads, water courses and earthworks of the Ancient Manor of Myton. The maps and plans are described chronologically up to 1910. There is an index to the street names, key buildings and the names of the map and plan makers. |

Book possibly purchased in London from a bookseller who was selling the collection of Martin Mason (T. J. Mason's nephew). It includes a loose laminated sheet detailing the windmills and their locations that are shown on the plans.
