Scope & content | This booklet looks at the economic decline of windmills through the example of Chesterton windmills near Cambridge built in 1848 and operational until 1921. The French family acquired the mill in 1853 and milled on the site over four generations, adapting their methods to changes in the trade. Firstly with steam power using a Turners of Ipswich steam engine and then installing roller flour mill machinery to replace the millstones. Using the meticulous financial accounts from three ledgers covering three periods between 1910 and 1955, the author charts the income and decline of the milling business, the spread of customers and the types of grain and cereal products produced. |
