Scope & contentThis book describes the Anglo-Russian invasion of Schoorl in Noord-Holland (North Holland) in the summer of 1799 and the after effects on the surrounding polders and mills. The Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland (or Anglo-Russian expedition to Holland, or Helder Expedition) was a military campaign from 27 August to 19 November 1799 during the War of the Second Coalition. An expeditionary force of British and Russian troops invaded the North Holland peninsula in the Batavian Republic.Chapter 1 describes the town of Schoorl in Noord-Holland province as it was at the time of the combined Anglo-Russian invasion in the summer of 1799.Chapter 2 describes and illustrates the centre of Schoorl in 1799, with photographs of a model reconstruction, and detailed town plans, including excerpts from cadastral records.Chapter 3 describes the Anglo-Russian invasion, from contemporary records and eyewitness’ diaries.Chapter 4 describes the battle of Schoorl, with contemporary illustrations.Chapter 5, ‘After the invasion’, describes, with illustrations, the destruction wrought by the invasion, and its effect on the surrounding polders and mills.A bibliography is provided. This is followed by appendices: 1. An inventory of house-owners in Schoorl in 1799, their houses and notes on the known fate of the houses; 2. Alphabetical list of inhabitants receiving ‘rations’ in February 1800; 3. Alphabetical list of inhabitants in 1799, classified by household, sex and religion. With a foreword by L.H.M. Quant, mayor of Schoorl and chairman of the working group preparing this bicentennial book, and an introduction by the author.
