Scope & content | Part I is an introduction to the history and development of milling from prehistoric times to the modern day. Part II decribes the history, industry and milling machinery of the watermills on the River Uck and its tributaries including Tickerage Stream, and the River Ouse and its tributaries including Batts Brook. Industries include: corn, fulling, gunpowder, iron, oil, leather dressing, paper, weaving. Part III describes the history, industry milling machinery of the windmills at Barcombe and Chailey. These two parts are heavily illustrated with photographs, sketches and maps. Part IV contains a information about the millwrights around Uckfield, census returns for the millers and millwrights from 1831-1891, references to millers found in the Newnham and Shelley manuscripts, and the references to millers transcribed from the East Sussex land tax records for 1785. A list of selected source material and a glossary of mill terms is provided. |
