Scope & content	This is a biography is based on the papers of Ernest Simon who inherited his father's business (Henry Simon Engineering) at the age of 23 and made it into a major industrial enterprise. He was also Lord Mayor of Manchester and became a Freeman of the City. He was also the Treasurer and Chairman of the Council of the University of Manchester, particularly sponsoring the Social Sciences. He represented Manchester as an MP, was a Chairman of the BBC and eventually sat in the House of Lords.
