Scope & contentThe material for this booklet was discovered by Robert Bell, Museum Steward of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum. It was in two folders, handwritten in blue crayon, in the Museum Library. These were the unpublished books - 'Wisbech windmills' and 'Windmills around Wisbech' - written by Arthur Oldham in the late 1940's and early 1950's; only a few typed or handwritten copies were produced.

Robert Bell has supplied a great deal of additional information, particularly on the early history of many of the mills and the inclusion of some mills not mentioned by Oldham. Personal reminiscences are those of Arthur Oldham. Information on local mills came from a wide variety of sources: local newspapers; Land Books of Wisbech St Peter's (annual land tax records from 1752-1806); Wisbech Watch Books (detailed land tax records for 1792); Manorial records and court books for the Bishop of Ely's Manor of Wisbech Barton, the Manor of Wisbech Murrow which belonged to the Dean & Chapter of Ely Cathedral, the manors of Walpole Colville and other local manors. Manorial legal terms are defined.

There is a useful bibliography and a glossary of milling terminology.
