Scope & content | Summary Translation A guide to the two cap winders in Greetsiel, one built in 1856 and the other in 1921, but both on sites which had long been locations for windmills. The guide describes in detail how the mills operate, from the turning of the sails to grinding and hulling. It takes the reader through all the components of the mechanisms, the millstones, their production and maintenance, and the sails. It goes on to discuss the immediate history of the two mills, and suggests a number of reasons - technical, economic and political - why mills were abandoned after the war. It ends with an overview of grist and flour from different grains. The booklet is fully illustrated with black-and-white photos and has a cross section of one of the two mills on the inside back cover. |
