    Scope & contentSummary Translation
A book about mills in the Tibetan ethnic area. Isolation from the outside world before 1960 means that traditional craft work has largely survived. Tibetan water mills are used mainly to produce tsampa, which is coarsely ground and roasted barley.

The book is divided into two sections. The first deals with the historical distribution of mills in Asia; the last horizontal water wheels in the Alps; the product of the mills; horizontal water mills of different types in different parts of Tibet; overshot norias and Maltese toothing; mills with undershot milling gear; examples of dressed millstones; buildings and leats; overview of particularities of Tibetan mills and their distribution.

The second section examines social and cultural aspects, namely: millers in Tibet before 1960; millers in modern Tibet; the state and the mills; nutrition with tsampa; types of mill in Tibet; technical data about Tibetan mills; mills in neighbouring countries. The soft-covered book is illustrated with photos, sketches, diagrams and tables.
