Scope & content | A comprehensive guide to the mines of the Lake District and other areas of Cumbria. This gazetteer divided into area sections with a rough area map and a detailed list of surface locations of 1400 mines and quarry workings with NGR references found on 1:25000 OS map. It is assumed that the reader is experienced in fell-walking and mountain craft as the terrain is rough and the walks are only briefly described, though nearby parking is indicated. Interesting historical information is provided giving the date the mines were sunk, the remains that can be seen, the minerals extracted and connections with other levels and mines in the area. Visitors can also explore trials, smelters, dressing floors, and the railways that serviced the mines. Minerals extracted were mainly lead and copper but also included antinomy, wolfram (tungsten), graphite, zinc, cobalt, baryte (Aluminium). This is the eleventh book in a series on the Lakeland mines by the same author. |
