| Scope & content | This book presents the evidence collected in the first part of a Research Framework for the Archaeology of the Extractive Industries of England. The research was carried out by the National Association of Mining History Organisations drawing primarily on expertise in the voluntary sector. The work presents a comprehensive research assessment of the historic extractive industries in England with an in-depth study of available resources using published material before examining the current state of archaeological investigation. It brings together current knowledge on a wide range of issues including the geological context, the technologies used , the infrastructure of the industries and the impact on transport links and settlement. It also examines the historical document-based research and the results of archaeological investigation not just for the extraction of the minerals but the preparation and processing where it was carried out. The research agenda reveals gaps in the current knowledge on all aspects of historical mining and quarrying, the potential for new or further investigations are identified with a series of research aims across a wide range of themes.
