Scope & contentThe United Kingdom’s flour milling industry is one of the country’s most productive sectors, according to the Economic Impact Report commissioned by UK Flour Millers and prepared by Policy Points. The report reveals that the industry generates £141,000 in gross economic value per employee, well above the national average of £64,000 and surpassing industries like manufacturing and construction.

The flour milling industry contributes £2 billion in turnover to the UK economy and adds £700 million in value. It supports 9,000 direct and indirect jobs and generates £270 million in tax revenue for the government.

Gary Sharkey, President of UK Flour Millers, emphasized the industry’s efficiency, driven by continuous investment in technology and infrastructure. He noted that the flour milling sector relies on substantial volumes of home-grown wheat, contributing to British food security. In addition to its technological advancements, the industry is focused on developing the next generation of mill managers, offering programs such as the Advanced Milling Diploma and hosting seminars on research and development. Furthermore, the sector is involved in promoting public health, exemplified by the Fibre February campaign.

Daniel Zeichner, the UK’s Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, described the flour milling industry as a “key asset,” supplying a critical ingredient to the nation’s diet. He acknowledged the sector’s significant role in the country’s economy, reflecting its productive nature.

Over the past decade, the industry has invested more than £250 million, with eight new mills established as part of these efforts. The UK flour milling sector is composed of 32 companies operating 51 mills, with the four largest companies accounting for 65% of total production
