Lessons from Pioneers

This set of materials epitomises some of the work done by volunteers and interns to interpret our collections.

The 1970s and 1980s education pack is an homage to Dr Peter Musgrove (who is also seen in the corresponding Throwing Machine YouTube video). A pioneer in the wind industry, at the archive we are lucky enough to have a huge selection of his materials from the 1970s onwards. In the pack, University of Reading students Katie and Megan unpack some of the highlights of this collection, as well as interviewing him on his work, story and predictions for the future.

The education pack on Renewables and Activism is created by University of Reading student Amelia Nicholsby, inspired by David Elliot’s collection of Undercurrents magazines, which heavily feature examples of pro-renewables activism in the mid-century. The education pack delves into the different motivations behind renewable energy activism over the decades: from the 1960s to the 2000s.

Finally, one of our greatest inspirations at the archive is Mildred Cookson: founder, at one point the UK’s only female water-miller, and milling expert extraordinaire. This biography briefly summarises her life’s work, and attached is Part One of Three of an interview with her. To hear the rest of the interview, contact our archivist Nathanael at archivist@millsarchive.org. Alternatively, the best way to learn more about Mildred is to visit the archive and talk to her yourself!
