It’s going to be tough for young people in the post-COVID world. To find work, they are going to need to stand out from the crowd more than ever before. With your help, the Mills Archive intern programme can make them do just that.
We help young people like Sarra, Lewis, Lydia, Hannah, Christopher and Kate, our former student interns, to gain valuable work experience. This improves their chances of success in securing a job immeasurably. But providing work and support for our interns costs money. We can’t do it without your help.
We want to help more students achieve their ambitions. Your help can give our interns the opportunity to learn new, marketable skills. Not only related to conserving, cataloguing and digitising precious documents, important as these are for budding archivists, but working as part of a team, handling responsibility and managing projects. Help us deliver these precious advantages to more young people this year.
Kate gained international recognition for her organising and cataloguing of 1,226 photographs of Finnish Mills. Being treated as an “aspiring professional” boosted Kate’s confidence and inspired her to become a qualified archivist. Christopher found working with us invaluable for his professional development, enabling him to gain the “practical knowledge and confidence” that led him to pursue a career in research.
Our contribution to our interns’ lives is not limited to helping them with their careers. They gain on a personal level too. Christopher found “a real sense of community and friendship” at the archive, the result of a “close-knit relationship” between staff, interns and volunteers. The “lovely environment” created at the Mills Archive made work a pleasure for Kate.
Help us make our interns’ dreams come true. We hope that we will be able to re-open our doors to people like Christopher and Kate very soon, but we need your help to make that possible. It costs us £200 per week to supervise and mentor an intern. We aim to offer 13-week placements to four interns every year. To achieve this, we will need to invest £25,000 annually. Please help us raise this sum so that we can help young people achieve their potential.
