Peter Musgrove inspecting a wind turbine – MUSG-PHO-07-010 |
Dr Peter Musgrove has been made a CBE, “for services to renewable energy” in the King’s Birthday Honours List. CBE stands for ‘Commander of the Order of the British Empire’, the highest rank below a knighthood, and a significant acknowledgement of his many years of work as an engineer and renewable energy pioneer. Peter has been a long-time supporter of the Mills Archive Trust, and someone who encouraged us to extend our remit to preserve the history of the modern renewable energy sector. Over the last few years he has been progressively transferring his own papers and publications to our stores, including photographs and correspondence from throughout his career, his library of many rare titles on wind power, and the records of the origins of the British Wind Energy Association, of which Peter was one of the founders, now RenewableUK. |

Items in the Peter Musgrove Collection. |
Peter has remained helpful and willing to pass on his knowledge and share his experiences. He worked with two University of Reading students to record an interview about his career, which we have archived, and remains on hand to answer any technical questions we might have. This ensures that we can describe his records accurately and in a way that helps researchers to find and understand the contents of his collection. Peter’s book Wind Power has also been invaluable in researching the history of wind energy as part of our European project to develop an interactive map showcasing the story of wind energy across Europe and across time periods. |

Volunteer Rebecca working on cataloguing some of Peter Musgrove’s photographs. |
We are now embarking on cataloguing parts of his collection to item level and digitising some of the most significant records. New work experience volunteer Rebecca has got off to a great start and is progressively cataloguing and digitising some of Peter’s photographs. Rebecca is seeking to pursue a career in archiving and has taken to our renewable energy history records like a duck to water (or should that be a bird to wind?). I know that she plans to contact Peter soon to ask him about some of the details of photographed wind turbine machinery. Rebecca has also been brilliant at working on developing our interactive European wind energy map. We would all like to congratulate Peter on his CBE and we hope to continue our collaboration with him for many years to come. We invite you to keep visiting our archive catalogue and watch how Peter’s collection expands in detail and visual materials, freely accessible for research, learning and enjoyment. |
