Nuts & Bolters: new project announced!

The Mills Archive Trust has received a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Sharing Heritage grant. This exciting project, Nuts & Bolters, led jointly by the Mills Archive and the Mills Research Group, has been given £8,700 to create an online illustrated glossary of mill terms.

Based on the stunning drawings by John Brandrick, a recognised mill draughtsman, and combined with photographs from the public, it will attract a great deal of attention. At the same time it will clarify the often mysterious inner workings of mill machinery, preserving this valuable part of our nation’s technological heritage.

This project will give a range of people – from enthusiasts, engineering students and millwrights to mill owners and volunteer groups – the chance to find out more about how a mill works and the changes that have taken place over time. The project will also encourage an interest in preserving this part of our nation’s history by offering competitions and prizes for people who get involved and provide new mill terms and illustrating photos.

Keep your eyes peeled for further information and ways that you can get involved. If you would like to find out more about the project then please send an email to me at friends@millsarchive.org
