Historically there was a tremendous variety of water- and wind-powered machinery and, although much has been lost, there are still many examples that provide a fascinating picture of this aspect of Britain’s industrial past. The development of natural sources of power continues, and modern uses, such as electricity generation, underline the importance of renewable resources whose value to mankind has been recognised for over two thousand years.
