The story of Bowmans

A booklet, 22pp., with b/w and colour photographs.

This is the story of the Bowman flour mills founded by James Bowman at Astwick in 1857. Investment in roller flour machines and leasing three more mills in Hertfordshire: West Mill, Hyde Mill and Ickleford Mill.  This expansion ensured that the company grew and prospered. After the war, new technology, processing methods, such as heat-treated flour, and specialist products enabled the company to remain independent and grow in the face of stiff competition from the larger flour milling companies.

Recollections: The Bowman family; Fire at Station Mill.

In focus: Heat treated flours.
